Harbour Road in Kleinmond, a coastal town in South Africa’s Western Cape, began in the 19th century when a small group of fishermen settled at Jogensklip. It would later become Kleinmond’s harbour, now known as Harbour Road. This early community started Kleinmond’s growth, initially as a holiday spot for farmers from regions like Caledon and Swellendam. The harbour, built between 1938 and 1940, became a hub for the fishing industry, supporting perlemoen (abalone) processing facilities for packing, refrigeration, and canning, as well as a flower packing industry. Over the past 15 years, these historic early 20th-century buildings were transformed into a vibrant mix of restaurants and retail shops offering art, curios, wildflowers, pottery, jewellery, and clothing. 
Today, Harbour Road is a lively waterfront destination featuring over 29 galleries, shops, and restaurants with offerings like fashion, accessories, interior décor, art, books, and residential and commercial spaces. The harbour remains a working fishing hub, popular for catching snoek and rock lobster, and connects to leisure areas such as the Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve and Palmiet Lagoon via coastal walks. The redevelopment created at least 200 jobs annually in sectors fishing, tourism, and hospitality while enhancing infrastructure, including stormwater systems, sewerage, and roads. Harbour Road’s evolution reflects a balance of modern growth and historical preservation, making it a key attraction along the Whale Coast Route, roughly an hour from Cape Town.
